Italis Bombace, Gallis Cotton, gossipium est, lana vel lanugo xyli; i. e. gossipii fruticis, de quo Plin. l. 19. c. 1. ἐριόξυλον, Ulpiano l. 70. Si cui lana legetur, §. 9. D. de legat. 3. ubi ligneam lanam reddit: Origo vocis a voce Bombyx, quâ mollior lanae omnis linique lanugo venit Veterib. non solum quae ex vermibus bombycinis nebatur. Unde recentiores fecerunt bombax et bambax, quam vocem de gossypio vel lana xylina proprie usurpârunt. Italia etiam bambagginem vocant, citeriores Graeci Βάμβακα. Sed et bombycem de erioxylo dixit Plinius d. l. Superior pars Aegypti in Arahiam vergens gignit fruticem, quem aliqui Gossypion vocant, plures xyklon et ideo lina inde facta Xylina: parvus est similemque barbatae nucis defert fructum, cuius ex interiore bombyce lanugo netur, nec ulla sunt eis candore mollitieque praeferenda.
